About John Carter
~ Herding Dog Enthusiast:
For the past 20 years, John has
had an involvement with sheep and working dogs. He spent
several seasons shepherding in the high mountains of BC with
large sheep flocks doing brush control on reforested clear
cut logging areas using Border Collies, Kelpies and working
with other Herding breeds. John has owned Border Collies,
Kelpies, a Belgian Sheepdog and an Australian Shepherd.
John has run a school since the
early ‘90’s for herding handlers and sheep camps for those a
little more involved. He has also instructed at clinics and
as a visiting instructor at camps. Presently John is
offering training lessons at Laidlaw, B.C.
The Handy Ranchdog Series
(monthly arena points and time events) began in 1995 as a
way for new handlers to gain competition experience and is
similar to the AHBA Ranch Dog Events.
John has competed at trials as
far away a CA and SK. He competed in ASCA, AHBA and ISDS
style large field Sheepdog Trials at the Open Level. His
dogs have also earned AMERICAN HERDING BREEDS ASSOCIATION
HRD 3 AND HTD 3 titles.
He was the Editor of “LOOK BACK”
- a quarterly of the BC Stock Dog Association for several
years. His membership in BCSDA dates back to 1987 as one of
the original members.
In order to give everyone a
good day we are limiting registrations to 9 dogs and because
we have a lot of interest we have to restrict handlers to
one dog per person for the weekend.
Accommodations: Camping is
available at the farm if you wish to bring your trailer (no
charge), or there are motels/hotels in Rimbey or Rocky
Mountain House (both 30 minutes away) that cost about $100 a
night. A small B & B is available 10 minutes away but no
dogs are allowed in the house, they’ll have to stay out
overnight…cost is about $45.00. There is also a small motel
in Leslieville. Apparently it’s clean though not fancy…cost
is about $50.00 and they do allow dogs.
We will supply coffee, tea &
hot chocolate all day as well as a hearty lunch. Please
bring your own pop, juice and/or water but only if you want
bottled water, our well water is fantastic! If you have any
special dietary needs please let me know before the fun days
so I can try and meet them!
Please make sure you bring
warm clothing!! If necessary, we will have a fire going in
the house but it still can get darn chilly working outside!
Most of all come prepared to
have some fun with your dog!
Due to the amount of
interested, pre-registration is a must. For more
