Herding in Canada ~ Calendar

Happy sheep sleepin' in the sunshine!

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely
in a pretty & well preserved body,
but rather to skid in sideways, thoroughly used up, totally worn out,
& loudly proclaiming "Wow - what a Ride!"
~ ~ Peter Sage

We are located in west/central Alberta in the foothills of the Rockies.  The farm is on Range Road 4-4, 1-3/4 miles north of Highway #12.  35 minutes west of Lacombe (Highway #2), 30 minutes east of Rocky Mountain House, 2 hours north-west of Calgary, 2 hours south-west of Edmonton.

Our facilities include:

  • Several small pens for close-in training
  • 100' x 60' outside arena - for instinct testing, to provide a small safe environment the first few times the dog works stock; and for working ducks - set up with take-pen and re-pen areas and moveable obstacles
  • 106' x 226' outside arena - sized to meet regulations for most herding programs and for more advanced dogs - set up with take-pen and re-pen areas and moveable obstacles
  • Unheated quonset sometimes available for winter practice (not available during lambing)
  • Large pastures to work on long outruns and field work
  • Holding pens and alleyways for practice with close stock handling, driving and sorting work
  • Pools for the dogs to cool off in after a hard run
  • Camping available ~ sorry no hook-ups
  • Available stock includes both sheep and ducks
  • Cattle and appropriate facilities for clinics and trials are also available for rent by the weekend to groups of 15 dogs or more.

Please contact us for details about the following:

  • Facilities are available for rent for herding clinics, trials, fun days, ranch trials and demonstrations.
  • Sheep and ducks are available to rent  for herding events held off our property
  • Cattle and appropriate facilities for clinics and trials are also available for rent by the weekend to groups of 15 dogs or more.
  • We would love to talk to you about providing a herding demonstration at your event.

New to herding?  Please contact us for more information about how to get started or to register for one of our herding clinics!  Clinics for the spring of 2008 are as follows:

  • May 3 & 4, 2008 (Saturday & Sunday)

  • May 10 & 11, 2008 (Saturday & Sunday)

During June & July we may hold a couple of clinics but will be concentrating on working more with our own dogs, tuning them up for trialing and working more with other people wanting to trial their dogs during the summer.  If you wish to get involved in this more intensive training please contact us.

We participate in the WASCA (Working Australian Shepherd Club of Alberta) stockdog trials every July and all of us in the club will welcome you as a new member or as an interested spectator!  Check out the WASCA website at www.albertaworkingaussies.com for more information!

Check out the above photo (click on it for a larger view), I always thought we raised and trained Australian Shepherds to work the livestock,
but obviously our pigs have been "listening in" on the lessons...that's our 4 year old boar herding the sheep around!
He had a ball working them all over the barnyard and doing a darn good job of it too! :-)
